In November, I read the book Allegiant by Veronica Roth. Allegiant is a realistic fiction book with two different point of views that sometimes clash against each other. The main characters in this book, Tobias otherwise known as Four and Beatrice otherwise known as Tris, have always stuck to one major rule, don’t leave the city. However on night they broke it and they discovered a truth that has been hidden that changed their lives.
If you have read Divergent or Insurgent, this is the book to read! The mysterious truth is uncovered. This truth impacts Tobias’s and Tris’s life, forcing them to make very hard decisions and actions that they would never had done if not knowing the truth. This finale of the three book series will wrap everything together with a ton of action and information!
My favorite character in this book is Caleb because of his dynamic personality. In book one Divergent, Caleb helps his sister Tris stop the attack simulation which then released everyone in the simulation. However at the end of book two Insurgent, Caleb switches sides and helps the main antagonist Janine Mathews. In that book it is revealed that Caleb was helping Janine Mathews the entire time ever since he was young. This really hurt and angered Tris, but she still saved him from his own execution in the third book Allegiant because she still loved him. However as time passes the reason of why Caleb betrayed Tris is released as the truth is uncovered. According to the text, “Is that the explanation for Caleb’s betrayal-his damaged genes?” Although Caleb’s reason is reasonable, Tris still can’t forgive. Caleb has been desperate for forgiveness ever since. He even volunteers to give up his life for many others, but when it was time to give up his life, Tris took his place instead because she loved him.
My favorite quote from the book is on page 427, “‘She was a better person than I was, than I will ever be. And then she got attacked. A bunch of GPS beat her up.’” This quote is significant because genetically pure people are supposed to be calm and not violent but in this quote it is the opposite. Outside the fence people aren’t treated fairly. GPs are usually treated better than GDs because they are genetically pure but this quote doesn’t seem like the genetically pure are genetically pure.
